Please help save sea turtles!!!
It happens thousands of times every year and is a major reason why ALL five Pacific sea turtle populations are listed as either critically endangered, endangered or vulnerable.
Some species, like the leatherback turtle, have seen their populations decline as much as 95% over the last 30 years.
The truth is that we canât save these turtles if we donât get the canned tuna industry to clean up its act and change its fishing methods now -- including ending the use of conventional long lines.
Thatâs why Greenpeace is mounting a public campaign against the industry and why weâve sent our ship Esperanza to the Pacific to directly engage with the tuna fishing vessels responsible for the destruction.
Of all the fishing methods the industry uses to cut corners out on the water, long lines could be the most gruesome and deadly. They are primarily used by the tuna industry to catch yellowfin and albacore tuna-- the same tuna that you find at your local supermarket.
Long lines are just that -- ropes set by fishing vessels that stretch from buoy to buoy across the open ocean, with thousands of hooks stretching for miles. Every few yards, a long lead ending in a baited hook dangles from the main line.
Unsuspecting sea turtles go down to nibble on the bait and get hooked. When they canât return to the surface for air they drown and die a completely needless death. When the ship returns the dead turtles are unhooked and discarded over the side of the ship.
Together we can make this stop. Weâve already changed the supermarket seafood industry in this country and Greenpeace has successfully reformed the canned tuna industry in other parts of the world. We know we can do it here...but not without your support.
Greenpeace doesnât take money from corporations or governments. Our campaigns are solely supported by people like you who care about the future of our planet. We literally canât do this without you.

Justice for Defenseless, Injured Cat Beaten to Death by Harrisburg, Virginia Police Officer
Keeping in mind, the hours of service for animal control officers, Harrisonburg Virginia has several veterinary clinics and hospitals offering 24-hour emergency services for injured animals. There was no attempt made by anyone to contact any veterinarian or animal control officer. This officer's brutality is a testament unto itself.
After an examination by the officer who has no veterinary skills or training whatsoever, the officer determined Mr. Meadows had only two choices: To leave the animal suffer and die, or to euthanize the poor cat. Mr. Meadows, trusting the civil servant serving his community recommended perhaps euthanization would be best. The officer had the cat on the side of the house belonging Mr. Meadows. The officer drew from his belt his baton (sometimes called a night stick) and proceeded to strike the suffering cat repeatedly, brutally murdering the cat with torturous, unspeakable cruelty.
After the barbaric slaughter, Mr. Meadows was so shaken, he contacted news teams, reported the incident to others, and still had to clean the cat's blood from the side of his house. Mr. Meadows could not stay in his house that night, haunted by images of a poor, defenseless, injured cat being beaten to death by an officer who was hired by the city to protect and to serve.
The officer showed no compassion. There was no hesitation to kill. The officer's total lack of compassion and humanity clearly indicate he is not fit to work as a licensed peace officer, charged with protecting and serving the people, for whom his humanity and compassion may also be disturbingly absent.
The Harrisonburg Police Department spokeswoman Mary-Hope Vass declined to say whether the officer was disciplined, and said the department is reviewing its policy for handling animal complaints after an officer euthanized an injured cat by beating it with his baton. The department said in a statement this week that it conducted an internal investigation and took appropriate actions.
According to the laws of the State of Virginia:
§ 3.2-6570. Cruelty to animals; penalty.
F. Any person who: (i) tortures, willfully inflicts inhumane injury or pain not connected with bona fide scientific or medical experimentation or cruelly and unnecessarily beats, maims or mutilates any dog or cat that is a companion animal whether belonging to him or another; and (ii) as a direct result causes the death of such dog or cat that is a companion animal, or the euthanasia of such animal on the recommendation of a licensed veterinarian upon determination that such euthanasia was necessary due to the condition of the animal, is guilty of a Class 6 felony.
The authorized punishments for conviction of a felony are:
(f) For Class 6 felonies, a term of imprisonment of not less than one year nor more than five years, or in the discretion of the jury or the court trying the case without a jury, confinement in jail for not more than 12 months and a fine of not more than $2,500, either or both.
If a common citizen, not in the employ of the municipality had committed this atrocity, certainly they would be dealt with according to the law. A police officer in the United States of America is a citizen first and a peace officer second. As a citizen, this officer should be dealt with according to the criminal code of Virginia.
Every city, county, state, and jurisdiction is responsible for instituting standard operating procedures and policies for emergencies such as this. Most of the time, the district has an animal control officer. In the event an animal control officer is not available, it is the district's responsibility to have in place a plan for recalling to duty an animal control officer and/or licensed veterinarian after hours to handle emergencies with injured animals.
Harrisonburg Virginia has several veterinarians who offer 24-hour emergency services. No matter the hour this event occurred, it is unacceptable that the officer did not attempt to contact a veterinarian. Instead, the officer decided the cat must die and proceeded to brutally assault the poor defenseless cat, causing great suffering and an agonizing death.
As concerned companion animal guardians, enthusiasts, activists, protectors, and champions, it is our moral duty that an example be made and this so-called "officer" be held accountable for his barbaric criminal act, and to see to it that nothing like this ever happens again!
Stop selling birds!
The company's trade in live birds also supports a mass-breeding industry just as cruel asâand less regulated thanâthe puppy mill industry; results in abysmal treatment of tiny, vulnerable beings; and ultimately leads to their overpopulation, homelessness, neglect, and suffering.

Ban the Sale and Trade of Peacock Feathers
The peacock is gradually becoming a prey of a growing business among young product designers, who use the beautiful birds' gorgeous blue-green feathers to make home decor items, pens, earrings, etc.
Currently, an Act prohibits the killing of peacocks as well as export of tail feathers or articles made from them. But, the Act allows domestic trade in feathers or articles under the assumption that these are naturally shed.
Since there is no way to tell if feathers were "naturally shed" the peacock remains in danger of rampant poaching, illegal trapping and killing of the birds for the purpose of their feathers in the black market trade.
Please imposed a comprehensive ban on the sale, transfer and trade of ALL peacock feathers. Close the loophole that allows for "naturally shed" feathers.

STOP the Rotten Egg Bill!
A cage is a cage... Vote NO on Preempting State Laws
I urge you to OPPOSE United Egg Producers' (UEP) amendments to the "Egg Products Inspection Act," which would nulify state laws concerning the treatment of laying hens -- and would forever keep hens locked in cages.
UEP's bill is a direct attack upon states' rights and our democratic process. It proposes an unwarranted increase of federal bureaucracy -- and a misguided extension of federal preemption. UEP's stated intention is to take away the rights of voters and lawmakers to enact and enforce appropriate state laws addressing farm animal issues. Don't be misled by UEP and HSUS. This bill would perpetuate abuse. Please help prevent animal cruelty and the loss of states' rights by opposing UEP amendments to the "Egg Products Inspection Act." Thank you.

Save Wolves from Wyoming's Shoot-On-Sight Policy
The proposal could lead to indiscriminate wolf killing across the vast majority of Wyoming, even on national forests and other lands owned by the American taxpayer.
Under this plan, wolves are considered predators in a majority of Wyoming and may be killed by anytime by anyone. Instead, wolves should be treated as other wildlife, especially on our national forests, where wildlife conservation is one of the core purposes.
Stand with the Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund as they work to help save these wolves. Tell U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe that you OPPOSE the premature delisting of wolves in Wyoming.

Janet Jackson: Cancel Your Fur Line!
Many of the artist's fans are shocked by her decision to wear and promote fur, especially since she has spoken against fur in the past and appears on several celebrity vegetarian lists. In a press statement about the fur line, Jackson said, "The art of fashion is one of my great passions."
According to Blackglama's website, "... less than 2% of the world's black mink population [is] deemed worthy of the exclusive Blackglama name." Unfortunately, these minks will live their lives in cramped cages before being killed by poison, electrocution, suffocation or gas.
An average of 40 minks must be killed to make one fur coat. Please sign the petition to convince Janet Jackson to end her fur line.

Stop Using Elephants for Rides and Shows
Dondi the elephant, 36, died unexpectantly in July at the Southwick's Zoo in Mendon, Massachusetts of tuberculosis.
Dondi was in direct contact with the public while giving rides. Elephants can harbor diseases transmissible to humans, including tuberculosis. Dondi had been in direct contact with the public for years, putting both children and adults at risk. During the summer she gave rides at the Southwick's Zoo; she was the second elephant used by the zoo who was found to have TB. Dondi performed circus tricks and gave rides at Flea World in Florida during the winter months.
U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines for the control of TB in elephants state: "Direct contact transmission may occur during activities such as touching or riding an elephant, being touched by an elephant, examining, medicating, bathing, and handling animals."
